Hello, my name is Brin Dunsire. I have more than one role in my employment with the Diocese of Northampton ; among these, I act as a Planned Giving and Funding consultant for parishes, groups and schools, advising on how to increase their income. This includes helping the Northampton Youth Ministry Office to supplement its financial resources by applying for grants and awards from external bodies such as Trusts, foundations, companies and local authorities.
DATES AND DEADLINES UPCOMING ! Every so often I get to hear of opportunities for grants or awards which have some kind of time limit attached to them. These will appear below, and be removed when the deadline passes (more or less), so if you see something which has disappeared next time you look, e-mail me ! Anything which is specific to one county or locality will appear in their own sections - see the link boxes at the foot of the page.
30th June 2012 - Church and Community Fund (England) Mission Statement: "The Church and Community Fund aims to grow the Church of England and develop its capacity to engage with the whole community" Objectives: By making grants to the national church and local projects the Church and Community Fund will assist the Church of England to: •Develop its capacity to engage with the whole community through supporting innovative use of resources; •Help transform areas of greatest need and opportunity and; • Grow spiritually and numerically. Strategic Funding Themes: In 2012 – 2014 the CCF will support, with grants between £10-20,000, projects that: 1.Significantly expand the Church’s engagement with neighbourhood renewal, 2.Seek innovative ways of developing established community projects so that they either a) grow existing or b) evolve into new communities of Christian Faith, and; 3.Replicate models of successful community engagement across the wider church. The CCF awards grants to projects run by local Anglican Churches in England or other organisations who are working in close partnership with the Church of England on the ground. (Brin says - If Catholic parishes or groups have a strong vision for community renewal they ought to be shared with local ecumenical partners in any event.) 15th July 2012 - BBC Children in Need. Grant applications are accepted from groups working with disadvantaged young people in the UK for projects which make a positive difference to children's lives (under 18 years). Disadvantage includes: illness, distress, abuse, neglect, any kind of disability, behavioural or psychological problems, living in poverty or situations of deprivation. Projects should be entirely focused on children. Where possible, projects should take into account children’s views and involve them in the decision making. Applicant organisations need to have a child protection policy in place. Grants of up to £10,000 can be awarded for up to three years, but only one year grants are given for capital projects, seasonal projects, holidays and outings, equipment and welfare funds. Application Form: Yes, available from the contact or website. NB It takes at least three months from deadline to decision notification. Contact: BBC Children in Need, PO Box 76, London W3 6FS. Tel: 020 8576 7788 Website: www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey
31st July 2012 - All Our Stories (Lottery). A new £1 million small grants programme has been launched by the Heritage Lottery Fund to support charities, community groups and heritage organisations running local history projects. The All Our Stories initiative will give grants worth between £3,000 and £10,000 to groups that explore local history. This could include researching local landmarks and using archives to discover the origin of street and name places. The application process is straightforward and “enables organisations across the UK to get the financial and practical support they need to deliver worthwhile and exciting projects”. [ Brin comments: You might need a bit of imagination to think how such fnding would help a Catholic youth group undertaking such a project: obviously it can cover the cost of materials, and fees for experts, but you'd have to be very creative to get a computer or anyone's salary out of it !] The deadline for applications is 31st July 2012 and groups will be told whether they have been successful by October 2012. To apply for the funding, visit the Heritage Lottery Fund website at http://www.hlf.org.uk/Pages/Home.aspx. [NB: some Christians avoid using Lottery money on moral grounds, and this is NYMO's policy, but we do not refuse to assist any group or parish who take a different view. ] |

Waitrose ‘Community Matters’ Funding Initiative Waitrose stores donate £1,000 a month to local good causes. Community projects in their localities can benefit from £12,000 of funding thanks to an initiative called “Community Matters” which was launched on 19th August 2008 (and as far as I can tell, is still going - June 11). Each month, Waitrose employees choose three causes to benefit from a share of the supermarket's £1,000 regular donation. Shoppers at the checkout are each handed a green token which they can place into one of three labelled boxes at the store exit, allowing them to learn about and vote for the cause they would like to support. The more nominations a cause gets, the greater the share of the donation they receive. All types of causes such as senior citizen homes, local schools, voluntary groups, sports clubs and youth projects are poised to benefit from the scheme. With Waitrose stores in our Diocese at Amersham, Ampthill, Beaconsfield, Brackley, Buckingham, Chesham, Daventry, Leighton Buzzard, Marlow, Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell Services, Northampton, Rushden and Towcester, there are plenty of opportunities! All you need to do is think of a project to be run by your youth group which will capture the local shoppers’ imagination and also could do with some funding. Contact Brin for advice.

Entries appearing above aren't the only possibilities - just the ones that need attention sooner rather than later. So, if you've got a longer-term dream or scheme for your youth-group or school which looks unachievable primarily because of shortage of money (rather than people and volunteers, which is another issue !) then get in touch and we'll talk about it.
Many possibilities for youth-project fundraising aren't time-sensitive: for example, there are ongoing sources of cheap computers, IT and supplies of all kinds. Click on the link to the left to find out about these.
We previously produced a short downloadable guide to fundraising ideas for the World Youth Day pilgrimage in August 2005. We think that's still useful, so you can download it below - and also the National Youth Agency's youth funding guide. The Faithworks website also has a comprehensive funding list for many categories of Christian social work (including children and young people) available if you register for free individual membership. |
