lux.teachings, Chesham: Becoming a Community of Faith

Last night we went to St Columba's in Chesham for lux.teachings.

Fr Bailey spoke to us about Mass and the fact that our faith is personal but not private and therefore should be shared with others in our community. He reminded us that we can help and inspire each other. He emphasised the word ‘becoming’, explaining that a community of faith is not something the necessarily happens easily but that we have to work at it to achieve a community who believes, hopes and loves.

Father also linked the mass to Mary, which links in nicely with our next lux residential weekend (www.nymo.org/maiden)! He explained that the readings are like when Mary was greeted by an Angel and told the word of God. He then said that the homily refers to when Mary asked “how can this be?”. The homily is there for the priest to try and open the eyes of his congregation to the word of God and to encourage them to live it out. Following on from this, he pointed out that the Creed refers to when Mary said “yes” – it is our opportunity to accept and proclaim for ourselves what we believe as a community and individually.

We had a time of questions and answers (in which Fr Bailey pointed out that Priests too struggle to understand God’s word and look to the community to help them too!), followed by a time of prayer in which we prayed for each other in the group. Thank you Fr Bailey and Chesham for having us!

Our next lux.teachings will be held in Bletchley on Tues 27th Nov. We will be with Fr Michael Harrison thinking about 'the last things'. For more information please see our website.
